Billboard Interviews Tiffany for YouTube Music Awards

After receiving the “Video of the Year” award on behalf of Girls’ Generation at yesterday’s YouTube Music Awards, writers for the Billboard magazine website conducted an interview with Tiffany in which she discussed winning the “Video of the Year” award, Girls’ Generation’s upcoming third Japanese album, and a Korean comeback in the works for Girls’ Generation.

Humble as always, Tiffany expressed her surprise at winning the award, saying, “This was totally unexpected and exciting” and “I’m just so thankful for it.” Tiffany also discussed what she believed was the appeal behind “I Got A Boy”, describing the video as “something new, something raw, more different, more urban” that “attracted both new and old audiences”.

The interview later touched on Girls’ Generation’s third Japanese album and the possibility of a Korean comeback. Tiffany revealed, “This album has some amazing songs. I can’t wait for everybody to hear it. I’m singing it all day.” However, Tiffany then explained that fans will have to wait a little longer for the next Korean comeback, saying, “We were due this year, but unfortunately due to delay…” and, “We’ll be out pretty soon, I hope.”

Finally, Tiffany once again gave her thanks to Girls’ Generation’s fans for their efforts in bringing Girls’ Generation the “Video of the Year” award, saying, “None of Girls’ Generation would be possible without the fans. We’ve grown into a family.”

Check out the full interview with Tiffany on Billboard.

Billboard joins the list of numerous news portals around the world featuring Girls’ Generation after the YouTube Music Awards. Other websites include Time, The Guardian, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and inTouch.

fany101

On October 16th, Tiffany attended a press conference for “Fashion King Korea“, an upcoming fashion competition airing on SBS. The press conference took place at the Prism Tower in Sangam-dong, Seoul with the other cast members of “Fashion King Korea”, including SISTAR’s Bora, Boom, entertainer Kim Nayoung, actor Lee Jihoon, and singer Yoongun. As each cast member posed for photos by the media, Tiffany showed off the fashion sense that earned her a place on the show, looking beautiful in a black dress. Tiffany also posed for photos with her partner on the show, fashion designer Ji Ilgeun.

During the press conference, Tiffany spoke about her casting in the show, saying, “I was jealous when I heard that Yuri was going to be acting in the drama, ‘Fashion King’, but I am thankful for the chance for me to be a part of a different ‘Fashion King’.” She continued, “To be honest, I had many worries before deciding to be on the show. I thought that there might be a minus for me. I will work hard instead of trying hard to win. As a representative of idols, I want to show viewers that idols do not just put on whatever is given to them, as well as the huge role that stage management has in showing off what we are wearing.”

“Fashion King Korea” will begin airing on November 17th. More photos here.

‘Allure’ Magazine’s September Issue Features Tiffany for an Interview and Photoshoot

Allure: Because it’s a beauty photoshoot, it focused on your face; how was it?
Tiffany: Because it was a makeup photoshoot, I put my own style down for a moment and did the shoot with the mindset of showing a new appearance. To be honest, I’ve been wanting to do a beauty photoshoot like this lately. It’s interesting how the mood changes depending on slight differences of the shape or attention of your lips, or angle of your jaw.

Allure: I was wondering what would happen if you were to ask them to remove some of the makeup because it was too thick.
Tiffany: I know well what kind of hair and makeup styles suit me. However, if I always look the same on stage, in photoshoots, and music videos, wouldn’t it be too boring? While me wearing red eye shadow was awkward, it was fun.

Allure: You went to Taiwan for a concert a few days ago, correct?
Tiffany: Yes. We have a concert in Indonesia planned in September, and a Girls’ Generation album will be released in the fall along with a Girls’ Generation subunit, Girls’ Generation – TTS’s album next year.

Allure: Isn’t your busy schedule tiring?
Tiffany: Now, for the first time, I’ve learned how to enjoy the stage. And so, I think I’ve become a real singer on my own. When dancing, rather than being tense thinking of the next sequence, the next part comes about automatically from my memories. In order to become like this, I did 26 concerts, and 7 years have gone by.

Allure: Do you not have any thoughts about acting like your other members?
Tiffany: I do have an interest, but I couldn’t answer the question, ‘Will activities other than singing be exciting?’ that I threw at myself yet. I think music is still more important. So I like Girls’ Generation – TTS activities where I can show my own musical color.

allure9-2

Allure: You’ve become IPKN’s muse, but you know that not anyone can be a makeup model. What’s your opinion?
Tiffany: I did my first CF shoot yesterday. The makeup artist who did my stage makeup since I was in my second year of high school said to me, “The skin care you did thus far is now coming through.” And I’m also grateful that I could become a makeup model when my skin is currently prettiest. The day before the shoot, like a kind of consciousness, I redyed my hair and I received treatment on my hands and feet which probably were not going to be visible on screen.

Allure: The brand being modeled and the brand the model uses can be different. What about for you?
Tiffany: I have a lot of curiosities with makeup, so I constantly use new kinds. The eye shadow palette I enjoy using isn’t sold in Korea anymore, so when I was about to become frustrated, I found something better at IPKN. I like the color formation and tenacity, but even the price is a lot more inexpensive.

Allure: Where do you buy makeup when you go overseas?
Tiffany: I enjoy looking for drug stores where you can buy effective products at a low price. What’s fun is that, for every country, the product’s characteristics are different. You won’t know how much time is passing if you look at the thickness of the pearl, and base’s texture and color combination, depending on the weather and culture.

Allure: So your skin is this nice because you have a lot of interest in makeup.
Tiffany: It’s to the point where, when we go overseas for a concert, if the other members didn’t bring a kind of makeup, they would gather in my room. Just like having natural-born skin, skin care is important. I also use different makeup depending on the condition of my skin for each day. Also, keeping up your makeup for a long time from morning is important, so I apply moisture and anti-aging lines in the evening. I don’t forget to apply it on my neck as well.

Allure: You did anti-aging care since your early twenties?
Tiffany: Because I don’t get enough time to sleep, wear makeup every day, and am under strong lights, they’re the worst situations for my skin so I began treatment earlier than others. I dieted at the beginning of Girls’ Generation’s activities, so I had more worries when I lost facial weight. So these days, I make sure to eat well.

Allure: Do you receive treatment from specialists as well?
Tiffany: Hwang Hooyeon’s acupressure massage is nice because it balances my waist that is pressured from dancing, and an esthetic massage by Mindy relieves knotted muscles refreshingly. Louivin’s esthetics lifting is good for facial care. Occasionally, when my pores are bothering me, I receive laser procedures at Brand New Clinic.

allure 9-3

Allure: Even though you’re still young, you know how to take care of yourself.
Tiffany: My mom told me that, “It’s important for a girl to take care of her fingernails and toenails,” and “If you want to dazzle, apply lipstick,” amongst other many things, since I was young. I also grew up seeing my mom look like that.

Allure: When applying makeup, what part do you work hard on?
Tiffany: I put emphasis on my eyebrows like my beauty icons, Audrey Hepburn, Brooke Shields, and Brigitte Bardot.

Allure: Are you still concerned about ‘airport fashion’ when you go the airport?
Tiffany: I don’t think fans who come to the airport to see me want to see forced, staged fashion. Wouldn’t they be curious about me in that situation? I choose comfortable clothes, and mind hair and makeup that matches it. Is this like what ‘natural beauty’ is? However, on a day when even I thought I looked too shabby, I took the newspaper I was reading on the plane and covered my face after getting off. (laughs)

Allure: What kind of woman do you think is an ‘attractive’ woman?
Tiffany: An ‘attractive’ woman makes a person say that they look ‘sexy’ only looking at their face, and not their clothing, hairstyle, or makeup.

Allure: After conversing with you until now, you give off a strong scent of a woman, to the point where the term ‘young girl’ seems colorless.
Tiffany: I’ve been thinking a lot lately. When my dream of becoming a singer came true as Girls’ Generation, I was really happy. But, when I was younger, I also felt mad because I couldn’t do what I wanted to do, not as a team. However, I think of everything now as the process of me finding my own color. Filling in things I’m lacking in and strengthening my forte. I hope I can change every year through those processes.

‘Elle’ Magazine’s June Issue Features Tiffany for a Photoshoot and Interview

When I said I would be doing a photoshoot with Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany, the responses from people around me were all the same. “She has a really good personality and is really relaxed.” “She has a lot of aegyo and is pleasant.” There were nothing but compliments, but I don’t know. Without opposing opinions, she’s a K-Pop star who is at the top and even completed her world tour (translator’s note: they are likely referring to the Japan arena tour) recently, so wouldn’t she be haggard and coy? My worries were perfectly unfound. Then again, before the shoot, when I called and asked her manager, “What should we prepare for snacks at the set? Does she like salads or fruits?”, they replied, “Haha. She probably won’t eat that. What she wants to eat changes each time. She will probably say she’ll eat a meal, so don’t worry about it.” When I got that response, I was relieved.

▶Q: How are you so bright and optimistic? Even when viewing you as a fellow woman, you’re so lovable.
-I really live off the power of food. I get sensitive when I’m hungry. You saw me earlier, right (in the middle of the shoot, she fully ordered and ate donkatsu, omurice, and California rolls)? Not too long ago, Hyunjin Ryu, who I met in LA, was even surprised when he saw me eat. He said I ate like a [baseball] player.

▶Q: What happened with the ‘Girls’ Generation menu’ that wandered around the internet?
-That’s nonsense! We sometimes do concerts that run for 3 and a half hours, and it’s just not possible with that diet. Also, the choreography for ‘I Got A Boy’ is really powerful. Strength is an essential. Our managers get surprised. They say our food expenses are more than Super Junior’s.

▶Q: Still, when compared to your debut, all the members, on average, have become slimmer.
-Yes, I really dieted when we were 20. After 6 PM was a bit difficult, but you lose weight by not eating anything after 8 PM as well. I didn’t eat snacks and drank 1,500 mL of water every day. Losing my baby fat helped too.

▶Q: Do you exercise too?
-I don’t like to. I exercise the least. Haha!

▶Q: There were a lot of outfits that show your stomach.
-At times like that, I don’t eat donkatsu and only have rice.

▶Q: You seem like a girl who has lots of interest in ‘pretty things’. From your makeup to your nails, you’re always bling-bling.
-You’re right. I have a lot of interest in beauty care. A separate dermatology, separate massages that liven up your facial line, a separate body massage… I go to offices equally. Because good places are all different. I consistently make an effort.

▶Q: Oh, you know your stuff. When you go overseas, you want to hurry back to Korea and receive treatment, right?
-You can understand because you’re also a girl, right? My managers are really exhausted because of it. Haha.

▶Q: You must be skilled at home care too.
-Of course. Sometimes when we’re too tired, there are members who just pass out and sleep. No matter what, I always cleanly cleanse and apply 4~5 kinds of skincare products. When it comes to hair, I’m the type to change it constantly, so I have to care for it well. Recently, Yoona touched my hair and was amazed, saying, ‘How is your hair this healthy when you perm and dye it so often?’

▶Q: I’m curious as to how Girls’ Generation’s vanities and bathrooms in your dorm look.
-The other members share bathrooms, while I use one alone. Still, my bathroom and vanity are completely crowded. To the point where I separate body products that are good moisturizers and ones with nice scents on different racks.

▶When you entered the studio earlier, a fresh smell spread.
-I mixed and sprayed Chanel ‘Chance eau Tendre’ and L’Occitane ‘Rose’ perfume today.

▶Q: Do you do your own makeup as well?
-While on our Japan tour, because the work fell short from Korean staff, we had no choice. Taeyeon and Jessica’s makeup skills are excellent. Let’s just leave it at me usually applying Shu Uemura BB cream, using an eyelash curler, and applying YSL lip tint. When I went on a business trip to the United States recently, I went into Sephora and frantically tested out YSL tints in particular. The colors were a lot more diverse than in Korea.

▶Q: Oh, now that you mention it, it must be difficult shopping in Korea.
-How come, I do it all! After getting my makeup done, if there is something I like, I immediately go to the mall and purchase it myself. But because we go to the airport so often, I end up buying it at the duty-free store a lot.

▶Q: When doing makeup, what is something you ‘must’ use?
-Fix mascara. I have a lot of eyelashes and they’re strong, making it difficult to use a curler, so I make sure to take it when I go overseas.

▶Q: This is something I’ve always been curious about. The competition for airport fashion is intense these days. Fashion is fashion, but it looks like you always have full makeup on. What do you do when you’re on the plane for a long period of time?
-It’s different depending on the person, but, even if it’s troublesome, I make sure to clean my makeup in the lounge before boarding the plane. Also, when they give out warm towels in the cabin, I ask for a couple, place them on my face, and sleep. And I frequently spray AmorePacific ‘Mist’.

▶Q: From cute to sexy, you’ve tried all kinds of styles. What style did you feel was most like you?
-I like me right now the most. I prefer a lady rather than a girl. Red lips aren’t awkward anymore either. Not too long ago, I watched Lee Hyori (unnie’s) new music video over twenty times. While watching it, I was really anticipating when I enter my 30′s. I think it’s a charming age where you have mature beauty and can freely enjoy things you love.

▶Q: Then aging ‘well’ must be important. I think you’d age prettily. I think how you smile well, are bright, and are optimistic are all bound to show in your face eventually.
-Recently, our makeup vice president said, ‘Our Fany’s heart is pretty, so her face is also pretty.’ Of course, I do receive treatment well and invest a lot into it, but I think my positive mind towards everything shows externally. This process of slowly becoming a woman is fun.

‘Californian Girl’: Tiffany Featured in ’1st Look’ Magazine for a Photoshoot in Los Angeles

Tiffany, who completed rehearsals for <Dream Concert>, was laid back and beautiful just like at the California beach. Like a person who has everything prepared. That is her way of living and her way of mapping out life. Twenty-five, Tiffany is astute.

“At my current age, I don’t think I can express myself like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I think doing music that suits my age is most natural and great. That is also truly what is most like you.”

The ‘hurl-down pitch’ you threw in LA garnered lots of attention.
I was actually ill-prepared for it…. I don’t have any regrets though. I didn’t have any time to warm-up and went on the field for interviews and took pictures, and things were hectic so I guess you could say my energy weakened? I didn’t know there would be that many reporters either, so I was a bit taken aback.

Are you personally satisfied with the results?
I’m not a baseball player, and I think that was enough for it to be a fun and enjoyable experience. After pitching, I asked Hyunjin Ryu, ‘Could I throw it one more time?’, but he replied, ‘No, you can’t.’ (laugh) So I told him next time, if possible, to let me sing the National Anthem instead of pitching. I get less nervous if I have to sing. Anyway, it was a place where I could show my Korean pride, so it was an honor.

Right after you returned from completing the photoshoot in LA, you appeared at <Dream Concert>; you must be really busy. You frequently have shoots overseas. Do you have a secret when it comes to getting used to different time zones?
There isn’t anything in particular, but my body adjusts on its own. When it’s dark, I sleep, and when I open my eyes, I eat. (Haha) Girls’ Generation doesn’t have a problem with jet lag. We go overseas almost every week, so we’ve gotten used to it.

After your schedules in LA, did you return after relaxing? After debuting, we haven’t received a long vacation, so my members and I talk about vacations a lot. Saying we should go somewhere by ourselves if we get the chance to later in the future.

Where do you want to go on vacation to?Florida or Las Vegas.

Do you want to go to the casinos?
No. I just want to shop freely and watch fun shows.

‘Tiffany’s compact car’ came up in real-time search charts recently. Is there a reason why you bought a compact car?
It was my first car ever, so I thought it would be good for it to have a special meaning. Before purchasing it, I thought a lot about it before deciding. If not now, I didn’t think I would ever be able to ride it. And the price was nicer than I thought. (laughs)

Do you drive often?
Honestly, there isn’t a lot of time to drive. It’s been about a year since I bought my car, but I only have about 1000km on it. So I just gave my car key to my manager to hold onto.

Out of all the places you’ve driven to, which place left an impression?
Itaewon. While feeling a bit of ‘Itaewon Freedom’, I went with four of my members. At the time, I didn’t know how to read the GPS, so we wandered for a really long time, but I think it was a dynamic experience.

We’re going to try a simple psychology test. You went to a bookstore. From bestsellers, fashion magazines, autobiographies, and romance novels, which would you choose?
Hm… A bestseller. I actually went to the bookstore not too long ago. When I go, I usually buy the original novel of films. I read the books beforehand for movies that I like when they’re about to premiere. I bought <Fifty Shades of Grey>, which is a rated book, but it’s good. (Haha)

Is there a particular reason why you buy the original novels?

I want to act in the future, so I think it’s a process in preparing for that time. I can see how the actors portray the characters in the novels and studying them also helps me.

I will tell you the result of the psychology test now. ‘Bestseller’ can be interpreted as uneasiness towards being behind the generation. Do you agree?
I think that’s correct. My mentality is coming out exactly. (laughs) I constantly make an effort not to fall behind and keep learning. That’s also a celebrity’s fate.

Is there anything you’ve become immersed in lately, that you don’t even realize time is passing?
As always, I think it’s music. Not too long ago, Justin Timberlake made a comeback for the first time in 7 years. The album was so good that after I listened to it, I tried listening to albums from his ‘98 debut until now. I think music is something that’s new every time you listen to it. He also debuted as an idol, promotes as a soloist, and is an artist who acts, so I think there is a lot I could learn from him.

Depending on your age, doesn’t the type of music you seek differ?
You’re right. When I was in my early 20′s, I liked bubbly, cute songs, but I think I prefer mature music now. At my current age, I don’t think I can express myself like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I think doing music that suits my age is most natural and great. That is also truly what is most like you.

Is there, by any chance, a talent someone else possesses that you would want to steal?
Beyonce’s professional spirit. I read an article with her interview recently, and she said, ‘I prepare 3 months for a 15 minute performance.’ What’s even more impressionable was when she said, ‘If I can’t at least sing or dance like this, I’d be a fool. That’s because I put that much effort into it and am that confident.’ I thought that she’s really a great professional. Personally, I think that talent isn’t natural, but that it’s more important to put forth an effort.

I think that intense self-regulation is inevitable, especially to survive in the entertainment industry.Yes. Rather than getting to the top, maintaining that summit is even more difficult. (laughs) And so endlessly working hard is very important.

That’s true. There must be a lot of idols who covet Girls’ Generation’s position.
Fortunately, the results are just as good as the hard work put into it, so I’m proud. Even on days I have off, I receive lessons and practice choreography.

If you always think about music, doesn’t life become monotonous? There ought to be times where you get stressed or suddenly feel futile. Is there an item that excites your life at times like that? Or are you going to answer ‘music’ again?
No. Shopping. (laughs) I have a lot of interest in fashion, so I really like clothes. Because I’m a girl, I try on pretty things, and when I buy clothes, I get in a good mood.

Do you eat foods well without being picky?
Yes. Surprisingly, I’m not that picky. I like Korean food in particular. In the past, I ate cereal or bread for breakfast, but now, if I don’t eat kimchi and warm soup, my day is tiring. (laughs)

The future can be vague for one person, while it’s specific for others. When you imagine your future 5 years from now, what kind of life do you see unfolding?
I’m really specific. (laughs) This is because, looking at BoA sunbae, I dreamed of becoming a singer and was determined, with a plan of, ‘When I go to Korea, I’m going to at least become like BoA sunbae.’ Honestly, my members and I even say, ‘Did you think we would become like this?’, and I said, ‘Of course. Because I prepared for it completely.’ I think I’m always preparing and planning for the future. And so in 5 years, don’t you think I’d become an artist who seeks her own music, promoting solo like Beyonce? In 5 years, I’ll be 30 years old, so I think I’d also get married. Because I want a family at 30.

So you’re saying you want to have your cake and eat it too?Yes, I do.

Then, in order to fulfill your future, is there something you’re doing? It’s been 6 years since we’ve debuted. So if I’ve practiced filling the stage with 9 members until now, I’m practicing filling the stage with 3 members, promoting as the unit ‘TaeTiSeo’ last year. Also, OSTs have been helping with the experience of overwhelming the public with just my voice, without dancing. <All About My Romance> is my fourth OST, and I got a little greedy this time around and worked really hard. While recording in the studio, I extended the hours I worked. If you listen to OSTs I sang in the past and this one, there’s probably going to be a big difference. (laughs)

What about your thoughts on marriage? Like you said, what kind of man is your ideal husband?
In the past, my visual ideal type was Jo Insung, but I heard about his relationship not too long ago. (laughs) I actually think my marriage partner would be someone with the same beliefs as me. I’m Christian, there are spouse prayers, and I think God will decide on who will become my husband.

August 1st is your 25th birthday. Is there anything you have planned by any chance?
Girls’ Generation’s debut date is August 2nd. And so we’ve been talking about having a grand celebration together with my birthday and debut anniversary this year. I want to rent out an amusement park and play all day, but I’m not sure if that would work out well. (laughs) If it doesn’t, I’m just going to eat dinner with the members.

Your ‘this or that’ style makes it seem like you’re a radical type.Yes, that’s right. I’ll either go big or go small.

What’s the biggest personal change for you as of late? There isn’t anything special.

Then I’ll change the question. What is a personal change you want?Oh, I thought of something. I’ve been receiving lessons lately. I received a guitar as a gift not too long ago, and a guitar is a bit of a wild instrument, and I’m a bit wild too? And so I’ve been learning piano to become a bit more relaxed, but [the person teaching me] is someone I know personally, so they aren’t strict on me. So I’m looking for an instructor who will scold me while teaching me. Someone who’s really scary.

During interviews, there are words that interviewees particularly put emphasis on. I felt a strong emphasis on ‘acting’, so do you have a desire to become an actress?Yes. There’s are images that Girls’ Generation members give off to the public. Like ‘someone acts, someone sings’. I have a strong vocal image, but if given the opportunity, I would really like to act. It’s not that I want to play a lead immediately, but I’m waiting for my first role that can portray me in the prettiest, best way.

Isn’t the term ‘pretty’ defined as to express appearance? No. It’s just a role that can naturally show my real self. I want a role that is so natural that it makes it look like I’m not even acting.

Specifically, what kind of character?
A bright, strong, astute, and a role kind of like Candy (translator’s note: from the ‘Candy Candy’ anime). (laughs)

You’re reaching your mid-20′s now. What is your life moving towards?K-Pop is gaining lots of popularity in America. In the past, I thought, ‘It’s Girls’ Generation, why can’t we enter the United States?’, but I think there’s a time for everything. I’m working hard now, waiting for that opportunity. It’s a wisdom that I’ve gained while being active until now, but I think waiting for the right moment is important. If you work hard, your sincerity gets through, and I truly believe an opportunity will come.
